Farer is one of those brands that even though they started small, over time, they quickly shed the notion of being a microbrand in the watch industry. To me, even though they are a relatively new company and operate on a smaller scale, it’s hard to peg them as a microbrand per se. They feel like a modern brand, a new kid on the block, which could one day, become a mainstay in the industry.
They started at the quartz end of the spectrum and over the past few years have made their way up the mechanical complication ladder offering automatics, GMTs and even split seconds chronographs to the market. One of their latest offerings, however, is a mechanical hand-wound chronograph that offers a new and unique take on this age-old classic.
In conjunction with the unveiling of the Farer Hand-Wound Chronograph, they also announced that they were the official timing watch of the 2019 Bernina Gran Turismo – an iconic race across the famous Bernina pass in the Swiss Alps. This is what I meant about them being a brand that doesn’t quite operate like a microbrand.
Being “British Design x Swiss Made”, the watches that Farer produces are quite unlike anything you see out there in today’s market. Instead of taking the safer route Farer’s watches all come with unorthodox colour combinations, and almost always in bright vibrant palettes. Thus the choice of a white dial and bezel with red and blue indicators all-round suddenly makes sense.
On the other side of their tagline, Swiss Made comes from the fact that they work with Swiss manufacturing partners, Roventa-Henex for all their watches. The Hand-Wound Chronograph collection features a 41mm case in 316L stainless steel and comes with a boxed crystal to give it a vintage vibe. The heart of the watch is also undoubtedly swiss thanks to the modern Sellita SW510 BH Elaboré grade movement that has a bespoke bridge, engraved with the Farer monogram chequered sports pattern.
The Farer Hand-Wound Chronograph is priced at USD1,950, shipped free worldwide and even has a 5-year guarantee.
