TAG Heuer celebrates a legendary milestone with the legendary Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition

160 years of existence, imagine that.

2020 marks 160 years since the beginning of Heuer. 160 years since Edouard Heuer founded the brand in Saint-Imier, Switzerland. And to celebrate such a momentous milestone, their first debut of 2020 comes with the TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition. This is a piece that harks back to the glory days of Heuer before ‘TAG’ was in the picture and back when Heuer was still very much a brand that garnered serious attention amongst automobile racers, both professional and amateur.

Arguably, the Carrera collection is the perfect home for a limited edition to celebrate a milestone of the brand as since its introduction almost 60 years ago, it still remains one of the most iconic names within TAG Heuer. Legend has it, it was in 1962 that the then CEO, Jack Heuer, came up with the Carrera collection and it was named after the legendary Carrera Panamericana, one of the most treacherous road races in the world.

This 160th-anniversary tribute was modelled after the “2447S” a Heuer Carrera made in 1964. With Jack Heuer’s love of clean design, this watch took on a monochrome silver-dial with well-proportioned indicators. As with all watches of the time, most of the design elements were driven by function and the clean and proportionate look of the “2447S” was to increase legibility, making it easier for racers to take note of the time at a quick glance.

Although modelled after a watch from 1964, it wouldn’t bode well if the watch didn’t also come with the advancement of modern watchmaking. The size of the new TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition has been increased from 36mm to 39mm in diameter but still retains the monochromatic silver dial with three subdials decorated with their azurage pattern.

If you look closely at the original and compare it to this new Carrera, you’ll notice that the permanent seconds indicator is now at 6 o’clock instead of the 9 o’clock. And this is due to the fact that the movement is no longer the Valjoux 72 of the past but rather TAG Heuer’s own Heuer 02 movement. This new movement comes with a massive 80 hours of power reserve, beating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. Chronograph geeks will love the fact that the Heuer 02 also comes with a vertical clutch for more precise start-and-stop functions and even a column wheel for a smoother feel when manipulating the pushers.

As a nod to the 160th anniversary of Heuer, the watch will be limited to only 1860 pieces worldwide with a retail price of USD 6,450 (Approx. MYR 26,150).
