If like me, you grew up in the 1990s, the newly launched collaboration between the Seiko 5 Sports and Street Fighter V will be something that inspires a bucketload of nostalgia. The six variants launched may be designed based on the latest Street Fighter game but the characters that they chose reminded me of the main characters in the arcade classic, Street Fighter II, released in 1991.
The collaboration will see the Seiko 5 Sports watch come in six unique designs, each inspired by the following characters of the game – Ryu, Ken, Chun Li, Guile, Zangief and Blanka. And as you can see from the images, the watches were all designed based on the new 3D character models of Street Fighter V.
Of course, the colours of the watch are the same as the corresponding Street Fighter V characters, but what makes it more interesting are some of the dial textures that accompany each piece. For example, the ripple pattern of the Zangief piece that is supposed to remind you of his special move “Cyclone Lariat” or even the rough texture on the Ryu watch mimicking the fabric of his “do-gi” Judo uniform. A detailed explanation of each of the design details can be found here.
For me, however, the best part about the collection is found on the caseback. As a huge gaming geek, I love the fact that the most iconic move of the character is printed on the back. Hadouken for Ryu and Shoryuken for Ken, enough said.
For non-Street Fighter fans, the watch is just basically the new Seiko 5 Sports watches with different design options. And although some of the designs are cool enough to be appealing even without the association with the video game, the fact that it has a slightly higher retail price compared to the standard model and is produced in a limited quantity may make it a tougher sell. For fans of the series, however, the struggle to keep your money in your wallets will be quite real.
