When Roger Dubuis first announced their partnership with Formula 1’s sole tyre supplier, Pirelli, in 2017, it marked a decidedly different direction compared to the other luxury brands that instead chose to partner up with F1 teams. However, when they revealed the collaboration watch would feature rubber straps made from the actual tyres of Formula 1 cars, it was clear that this collaboration had the same, if not more, of the emotional excitement that one of the world’s fastest motorsports brings.
Fast forward to 2021 and Roger Dubuis is still fully committed to this partnership and continues to bring innovations with their collaboration watches. For their new Excalibur Skeleton Pirelli, they looked to the pitstops for inspiration, marvelling at how the F1 teams make changing tyres and sometimes other parts of the car look so effortless. Thus, the new watches now come with an innovative one-click system to change not only the straps but also the bezel and the crown.
This new Quick Release System not only allows the wearer to easily swap out the mentioned components but is also built with a focus on a satisfying clicking sensation every time a part is changed. These interchangeable components all incorporate rubber from actual F1 tyres with pops of colour.
The watch itself offers Roger Dubuis’ first automatic skeleton movement, Calibre RD820SQ, with a micro-rotor winding system and the iconic Roger Dubuis star. The skeletonised bridges offer an unbridled look into the inner mechanics of the movement. The use of Titanium with a DLC coating gives a lightweight feel to the watch and as always, the watch is also certified with the prestigious Poinçon de Genève signifying that every part of the watch is carefully hand-finished by the manufacture.
