As the adage goes, “if it ain’t broke, why fix it.” And indeed, since the very first Casio G-Shock, the DW-5000C, was launched back in 1983, the design of this model has been left virtually untouched. Sure, over the years Casio has come up with new collections with various case shapes and sizes but this square version was and will always remain a classic of the G-Shock collection. And today, this oldie takes on a new and modern twist with the GMW-B5000TB, not in terms of design but rather with a new age case material – titanium.
The first iteration of the watch came in resin, then it was cast entirely out of stainless steel and they even had one with a gold plating for those who wanted an extra bling G-Shock. With the new GMW-B5000TB, the material of choice is titanium which not only is what the case is made of but also the bracelet. The most obvious difference between this version and the stainless steel one is the weight; you get the same toughness but it weighs 57 grams lighter.
This GMW-B5000TB is made entirely out of titanium and even comes with a matte black DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coating for better scratch resistance. This protection also continues to the display, offering a sapphire crystal with a non-reflective coating applied. As per the G-Shock philosophy, the unit is also extremely shock resistant and is waterproof up to 200 metres. As for functionality, you get the standard functions (I.e. stopwatch, countdown timer, alarm, etc.) but the GMW-B5000TB also has a world time function, and my personal favourite, the radio wave reception function that uses radio frequencies broadcasted from five different countries to sync the time.
The only downside of the watch is that the price tag is a whopping MYR 6,999, several times more than both the steel and gold plated steel ones combined. But if you can get over the steep buy-in, it is one hell of a good-looking watch. And there is even a titanium G-Shock that offers a laser-etched camo pattern design.
