In the last couple of years, Bell & Ross has managed to prove that they are indeed not a one-trick pony. After enjoying more than a decade of success with their watches that were famously modelled after the gauges found in the cockpit of an aeroplane, they then started to branch out, looking for inspiration in the seas and also on land. And now, they have taken it a step further by unveiling a brand new BR 05 collection, designed to fit the needs of the urban explorer. These watches bring all the same philosophies of legibility, functionality and quality that Bell & Ross have become known for but with an added emphasis on luxury.
The BR 05 comes at a perfect time as the hunger for luxury sports watches continues to grow. And because some brands have intentionally or unintentionally created scarcity for these luxury sports models, more choices will be a welcomed sight for the consumer.
The case design of the BR 05 builds upon the circle-in-a-square element of their BR 01 and 03 collections but the lines have been softened down for a more elegant approach. And compared to the more utilitarian models of the Bell & Ross family, this new collection of watches all come with cases that offer an alternating contrast of satin-finished and polished surfaces, in a very nice 40mm diameter. Apart from giving the watches more character, this subtle feature on the case also adds a level of attention to detail that is paramount in a luxury product.
The dial, on the other hand, comes in three colour variations – black, blue and grey – all with a sunburst pattern radiating from the centre. The BR 05 still keeps the iconic large numerals that mark each quarter – in this case, 6, 9 and 12, with the date window at the 3 o’clock – but instead of being painted on, they are now applied numerals that also accompany the applied baton indices. Borrowing an element from 1970s watch design, the collection also offers a bracelet that is integrated into the case. This stainless steel bracelet is remarkably comfortable to wear and we especially loved that it tapers down from the lugs to the clasp.
It would have been all too easy to just take one of their existing movements and plug it into the BR 05, but Bell & Ross decided that a new collection demands a new movement. And so the BR 05 is powered by the calibre BR-CAL.321. This movement is based on the Sellita SW300 movement but made to Bell & Ross specs.
